This will help reinforce Apple's self-built modem modem, to escape dependence on Qualcomm.

According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple is about to complete an agreement to buy back Intel's smartphone modem development at a price of $ 1 billion. Also according to WSJ, this deal may be announced early next week.

Earlier, Intel made the technology world shaken in April this year when it announced it would withdraw from developing a 5G modem for smartphones. At the time, Intel CEO Bob Swan said in his statement: "There is clearly no clear path to profitability and positive cash flow."

Intel's announcement came just hours after Apple and Qualcomm teamed up to bring a 5G modem to the iPhone under a six-year agreement. However, Apple has shown that it has not given up its efforts to produce its own modem.

Acquiring Intel's modem business will help them consolidate this effort and have greater control over a critical component in their device, especially when rumors show they catch top 5G compatible iPhone maker.
